John Englert has served the EMS community with the Bureau of EMS as the program manager for Education, Rescue, and the primary NREMT point of contact for almost 20 years. Knowing it or not, most EMS providers in the commonwealth today have interacted with John or been impacted by one of his programs at some point in their career. John died unexpectedly at his home on Monday evening. His obituary, care of the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, is posted below.
John Francis Englert, 63, of Bellefonte, Pa., died on Monday, July 10, 2023 at his home. He was born November 10, 1959, in Armstrong County, Pa., son of Janet Margaret Englert and John Francis Englert, Sr. John grew up in Ford City, Pa. and resided in Bellefonte for the past year. He graduated from Ford City Jr.-Sr. High School, class of 1978 and the Univ. of Pittsburgh in 2004 with a B.S. in Emergency Medicine. He was EMS Program Manager with PA Department of Health. John was on the first response team from PA to provide aid in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in a charge of ambulances. He committed his life to helping others. He worked for the PA Bureau of EMS for many years. Prior to that he worked for St. Margaret Paramedic Response Team, managed Richland EMS, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Trauma Coordinator, Lower Kiski Ambulance, Kittanning #6 Ambulance, Ford City VFD Ambulance, Ridgeway Hospital Care EMS, City of Pittsburgh EMS, and Univ. of Pittsburgh Center for Emergency Medicine and EMSI.
He was a member of Christ, Prince of Peace Parish in Ford City. John had a love for drums, was an antique fire collector and loved taking trips to Cook Forest. He loved Charlie Brown and reminiscing about the good and happy times growing up in Ford City. He loved his entire family unconditionally as was a true friend to all who knew him. He loved spending time with his daughters, their husbands and especially his grandsons, Caleb and Colin, who loved and adored him. He will be forever missed by his family and friends.
He leaves behind to forever cherish his memory his daughters, Amanda (Stephen) Gilliland, of Kittanning, Briana (Mike) Mason, of Washington, D.C. and Alexis (Alex) Sharrow, of Washington, D.C.; grandsons, Caleb John Gilliland and Colin Patrick Gilliland, both of Kittanning; mother, Janet Margaret Englert, of Ford City; sister, Monica Englert, of Ford City; sister, Susan (Paul) Wolfe, of Ford City; brother, Gregory (Gina) Englert, of Ford City; sister, Marjorie (Brian) Hobaugh, of Cranberry Twp.; sister-in-law, Cathy Kurpa Englert, of Indiana; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends in the EMS and fire communities. He was preceded in death by his father, John Francis Englert, Sr.; brother, Richard Joseph Englert; maternal grandparents, Richard Joseph and Eleanor (Erickson) Flynn; paternal grandparents, James and Anna (McKernan) Englert; and aunt, Cynthia Flynn.
Friends will be received from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, 200 S. McKean St., Kittanning, PA. Additional visitation will be held in the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, July 17, with funeral services to immediately follow at noon with Father Alan Grote officiating. John is to be cremated and his ashes will be spread at his favorite place, Cook Forest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of John F.
